AFT Promotion Points Guide

Your Army Fitness Test score can earn you up to 120 promotion points toward Sergeant (E-5) and Staff Sergeant (E-6). This guide explains exactly how the AFT feeds into the promotion system — and what we can and can’t tell you yet.

The verified facts

  • The AFT is worth up to 120 promotion points for SGT/SSG boards
  • Your latest record AFT is the one that counts
  • You must pass every event (60+ points each) for the score to count
  • Points are calculated automatically in IPPS-A — you don’t self-report
  • Only a record test (not a diagnostic) generates promotion points

Why there’s no points calculator here (yet)

Many sites publish an “AFT to promotion points” conversion table. We won’t — because the exact score-to-points mapping comes from AR 600-8-19 (Enlisted Promotions and Reductions), and we have not yet verified the current edition’s table against an official source. Publishing an unverified table would risk giving you wrong numbers on something that affects your career. When we’ve confirmed the official mapping, we’ll add a proper calculator here.

How to maximize your fitness points honestly

  • Maximize every event, not just your total. Since each event must be passed and points scale with score, a balanced 90+ across all five events beats a lopsided profile.
  • Take record tests seriously. Only record tests count — treat every record AFT like a board appearance.
  • Know your thresholds. Look up the exact scores you need on the AFT score chart for your age and sex.
  • Check your score first. Run your numbers through the AFT calculator before test day so there are no surprises.
